I’ve used tank heroes through every stage of the game. They are easy to build but getting the balance right takes some planning. In this Last War Tank guide, I’ll cover the best heroes, skill priorities, squad formation, and the upgrades that matter most. Understanding the Tank Squad
A full tank squad is one of the easiest teams to build in Last War Survival. It is also a solid choice for free-to-play players and light spenders. Most of its core heroes become available early. This gives you more time to collect shards and raise their star levels.
A standard Last War Tank squad uses two defenders in the front row and three heroes in the back row. The front line absorbs most of the damage. The back row provides damage and support. Using five tank heroes also activates a 20% boost to HP, attack, and defense.
Tank squads are strong against missile squads but weak against aircraft squads. Damage type matters too. Some heroes deal physical damage while others deal energy damage. Keep this in mind when choosing gear and planning defensive upgrades.
Best Tank Heroes and Their Roles
The usual lineup is Murphy and Williams in front. Kimberly, Marshall, and Stetmann take the back row. Each hero has a clear job in this Last War Tank setup.
Murphy
Murphy is a defensive hero who reduces physical damage for the team. He is easy to unlock and upgrade. His Exclusive Weapon also arrives earlier than most tank weapons. This makes him useful for long-term progress.
Williams
Williams is the other frontline defender. His skill increases defense without being limited to one damage type. Once upgraded, the effect can protect the whole squad. He is one of the toughest tanks available and works well beside Murphy.
Kimberly
Kimberly is the main damage dealer. Her rockets can hit random enemies and deal heavy energy damage. She is available very early and her shards are easy to invest in. For most players, she should be the first tank hero to receive major upgrades.
Marshall
Marshall fills the support role. He boosts the squad’s attack and critical rate. He can also protect the ally with the highest attack. His own damage is not the main reason to use him. His value comes from making Kimberly and Stetmann hit harder.
Stetmann
Stetmann is the second attacker. His electric attacks can strike several enemies and land powerful critical hits. He takes longer to unlock than Kimberly but gives the squad the extra damage it needs in tougher battles.
Skill Upgrade Priorities
Skill medals run out fast. Do not spread them evenly across every hero. Start by taking all core skills to level 10. After that, work in blocks of ten levels.
Kimberly should get the first major investment in most Last War Tank squads. Max her Barrage Strike first. Then upgrade Energy Assault and Energy Boost. These skills raise both her regular damage and burst damage.
Next, improve the main tactical skill for each hero. Upgrade Murphy’s Ironclad Barrier and Marshall’s Command Strategy. Then work on Stetmann’s Lightning Rush and Williams’ Iron Will. These skills have a bigger impact than their basic attacks.
Once the main tactical skills are finished, move to the useful passives. Murphy’s Stand Firm should come first. Stetmann’s Critical Charge is another strong choice because it increases his chance of landing critical hits. Williams’ defensive passive can follow.
Leave the defenders’ basic attacks until later. Murphy and Williams are there to survive. A few extra shots will rarely decide the fight. If you still have medals left, upgrade Stetmann’s Orb Lightning and Marshall’s Triad Harmony before returning to those low-priority skills.
Squad Formation and Progression Tips
Place Murphy and Williams in the front row. Keep Kimberly, Marshall, and Stetmann behind them. This formation gives the attackers enough time to use their strongest skills.
Marshall can sit in a safer back-row position since his main job is to support the team. Kimberly and Stetmann should stay protected for as long as possible. If either one falls early, your squad loses most of its damage.
Focus your resources on one team before building several average squads. A strong Last War Tank lineup needs hero shards, skill medals, gear, research, and drone chips. Splitting those resources too early will slow your progress.
Prioritize Kimberly when spending universal shards. She unlocks early and remains useful for a long time. Murphy is also easy to develop because his shards become available early. Williams, Marshall, and Stetmann can follow as you unlock them.
Use tank-specific drone chips once they become available. Keep your Tank Center and related research moving as well. These upgrades may look small on their own. Together they make a clear difference in close battles.
Tank squads are a good value but they still have counters. Avoid attacking aircraft teams with similar power when possible. Look for missile squads instead. The class advantage gives your team a much better chance of winning.
