I’ve spent plenty of time learning what makes Sima Yi so dangerous. He is fast and deadly, but poor timing can leave him trapped in seconds. In this HoK Sima Yi guide, I’ll explain his skills, combos, builds, settings, jungle pathing, and toughest matchups. Understanding Sima Yi’s Skills and Core Mechanics
The first thing I learned about HoK Sima Yi is that his skills only tell half the story. Most of his damage comes from the enhanced basic attack he gains after casting a skill. The first hit lets him blink behind his target. It also deals heavy magic damage. If he has built up Shadow Force, the attack gains extra range and true damage.
His passive also reveals nearby enemies when they use a skill. This even works on hidden heroes. Watch the minimap whenever the passive triggers. It can expose a gank before it happens or show you which enemy has just used an important ability. 
Skill 1 sends Sima Yi’s spirit forward while his body gains crowd-control immunity. The spirit deals damage on contact. His body deals another hit when it catches up. Let the spirit touch the target before using your enhanced attack. That timing gives you both hits instead of wasting half the skill’s damage. You can also use this skill to absorb incoming control or escape through a nearby target. 
Skill 2 creates a field that damages and silences enemies. Stay inside the field when possible. It improves Sima Yi’s healing and makes trades much safer. The silence is short but often long enough to stop a mage from fighting back. 
His ultimate covers a huge distance and deals strong landing damage. Aim ahead of moving enemies. If you land inside a bush, the warning marker is harder for the enemy to spot. During the flight phase, Sima Yi can also avoid many projectiles and control effects. Lock-on suppression is the main exception. 
Best Combos and Combat Techniques
I keep HoK Sima Yi combos simple because real fights rarely follow a perfect script. The key habit is using an enhanced basic attack after each skill. If you cast everything at once, you lose a large part of your damage.
For a close-range gank, use Skill 1 → enhanced attack → Skill 2 → enhanced attack. Add Smite after Skill 2 if the target starts running. Save the ultimate for the final chase or for a safe escape. This combo gives the spirit time to connect before Sima Yi’s body moves in.
When an ally has already stunned the target, open with Ultimate → enhanced attack → Skill 2 → enhanced attack. Use Skill 1 afterward to chase or reposition. Avoid starting this way against enemies who can sidestep the landing point.
In a team fight, the frontline can become your shortcut to the backline. Use Skill 1 and blink behind a tank with the enhanced attack. Then cast Skill 2 and jump toward the enemy carry. This works best when their control skills are already on cooldown.
Do not attack too early after entering spirit form. Wait until the spirit reaches the target. Do not wait too long either or your returning body may miss. The sweet spot is the instant the spirit makes contact. Once that timing becomes natural, Sima Yi’s burst feels much faster and far more reliable.
Recommended Builds, Arcana, and Settings
I build HoK Sima Yi for fast clears and heavy magic burst. A reliable jungle setup is Runeblade, Boots of the Arcane, Staves of Sorcery, Insatiable Tome, Savant’s Wrath, and Void Staff. This remains a practical full-AP route for the current version.
Runeblade speeds up the early clear and gives Sima Yi a useful first power spike. Boots of the Arcane add magic penetration. Staves of Sorcery works well with his enhanced attacks. Insatiable Tome adds sustain for longer fights. Savant’s Wrath brings the raw damage. Void Staff becomes more valuable once enemies start buying magic defense.

I do not force the same six items into every match. Buy the Breakthrough Robe if you need more room for error. Move Void Staff forward when several enemies stack magic defense. If the enemy team is fragile, focus on damage and end the match before their defensive items come online.
For Arcana, Nightmare, Hunter, and Mind’s Eye make a solid starting page. They give Sima Yi magic attack, penetration, movement speed, and attack speed. Those stats help with both jungle clears and quick kills. Fate can replace part of the red setup when you want extra durability.
A few settings make him much easier to control. Set Auto Chase Distance to Close Range. This helps you use an untargeted enhanced attack without jumping into danger. Turn off Hold to Show Skill Description so the text box does not cover your screen. I also recommend enabling Skill Picture-in-Picture. It lets you check the ultimate’s landing area before committing.
Jungle Strategy and Team-Fight Playstyle
My early goal with HoK Sima Yi is simple. Clear quickly and reach Level 4 without wasting time. Make sure Skill 1 hits twice on every camp. Let the spirit touch the monster. Then use the enhanced attack so the returning body deals the second hit.
After unlocking the ultimate, look at the middle and farm lanes. Mages and marksmen are usually the best targets. They are easier to burst and often rely on skills that Sima Yi can silence. His passive also tells you when a nearby enemy has used an ability. That small piece of information can turn a risky gank into a clean kill.
Do not stay in one lane for too long. Clear a camp after each failed gank. Take objectives when the enemy jungler appears on the opposite side of the map. Sima Yi needs gold to stay threatening. Falling behind makes every dive harder.
Team fights require patience. I rarely jump in first unless my ultimate can land from a hidden angle. I wait for the enemy to spend a stun or knock-up. Then I use Skill 1 to reach the backline and Skill 2 to silence the carry. If the target survives, the ultimate can finish the chase. If the fight turns bad, I save it as an escape.
Bushes make the ultimate much harder to read. Use them whenever possible. You can also cross the frontline by blinking through a nearby tank. That places Sima Yi close to the enemy carry without wasting his longest movement skill.
Avoid long fights with durable warriors. Sima Yi is built to remove fragile targets. He is not built to trade punches with a fed fighter. Pick one target. Deal your burst. Then leave before the enemy team can turn on you.
Common Mistakes
HoK Sima Yi is strongest against fragile mages and marksmen. He can close the gap before they get a second spell off. His Skill 2 also makes magic-heavy enemies much easier to handle. Use the passive vision to track them before they disappear into a bush.
Be careful against durable fighters. Heroes like Kaizer can survive the first burst and punish you once your skills are down. Hard suppression is another serious threat. Skill 1 can avoid many stuns and knock-ups, but it will not simply cancel every lock-on ultimate. Wait for those abilities before you commit.
The most common mistake is using Skill 1 and attacking too early. Let the spirit touch the target first. Otherwise, you lose one of the damage hits. Another mistake is blinking behind an enemy near a turret. Use an untargeted enhanced attack when the position looks unsafe.
Many players also spend the ultimate just to start a fight. That can work, but it leaves you with no escape. Check the enemy’s control skills first. Do not chase a tank across the map. Sima Yi wins through short bursts and clean exits.
