Diablo 4 Warlock: Release Date, Combat Style Breakdown & New Endgame Fun
2026-04-24

The Diablo IV expansion, Lord of Hatred, is finally arriving on April 28, 2026. This time, we’re putting an end to the long-running conflict with Mephisto. But that’s not all. Much like Diablo II: Resurrected, the expansion introduces a brand-new class: the highly anticipated 'Diablo 4 Warlock'. Alongside it come the Charm gear system, the legendary Horadric Cube, and the War Plans endgame system. Will these new features shake up the current Diablo 4 meta? Let’s dive into this hands-on preview to see how they actually play.
Note: This preview is based on a test version and may differ from the final release. Some terms are translated provisionally.
A New Chapter: Tracking Mephisto to Skovos
In Lord of Hatred, players continue the hunt for Mephisto alongside Lorath, traveling to the new Skovos island zone to stop the Prime Evil’s plans. Beyond the new map and main story quests, the biggest highlight is the second new class added since the Paladin – the Warlock.
Diablo 4 Warlock
The Diablo 4 Warlock is the second summoner class after the Necromancer. But unlike the Diablo II: Resurrected version – which uses levitating weapons and demonic binding – this Warlock feels closer to Diablo 3’s Witch Doctor. The core fantasy is commanding Demons, Lesser Evils and Prime Evils, while wielding Occult, Abyss, and Hellfire magic for highly versatile combat.
Diablo 4 Warlock Unique Mechanic: Soul Shards
The Warlock’s signature system is Soul Shards, divided into four types: Legion Shard, Vanguard Shard, Mastermind Shard, and Ritualist Shard. Each shard summons a unique high-tier demon and defines a different playstyle.
- Legion Shard – Standard Minion Swarm
This is the classic summoner build. After summoning a Greater Demon, you can cast Lesser Demon skills faster. Once you’ve summoned enough Lesser Demons, you can even summon a Greater Demon for free. The ultimate ability, Abaddon Fiend, calls a giant sword-wielding demon with a cleave range nearly half the screen. In practice, this felt like the most survival-oriented build.
- Vanguard Shard – Demon Form Brawler
This build revolves around the Demonform ultimate. When transformed, you become a Diablo-like demon, granting bonus effects to your Prime Evil summoning abilities. Perfect for players who prefer quality over quantity.
- Mastermind Shard – Stealth & Mobility
This path enhances the Warlock’s unique Shadowform and Abyss-related skills. You gain Stealth (a mobility tool that removes crowd control and lets you reposition), plus several Hex effects that amplify damage. The ultimate, Terror Swarm, is a spreading damage-over-time ability. With so many positioning and control options, this is the most mobile Warlock build
- Ritualist Shard – Explosive Caster
This is the explosion-focused build. Most skills are large-area burst abilities. It improves Overpower and Occult-related stats, and grants Corpse Explosion – so enemies blow up when they die. The ultimate, Apocalypse, requires a 6.66-second channel, but if fully completed, it creates a massive explosion that can wipe the screen. This is hands-down the highest-damage build.
Due to the early-access nature of this preview, I couldn’t fully test all four builds. But it’s clear the Warlock plays very differently from the Necromancer. Rather than commanding pets to fight for you, demons often act as resources. Most demons don’t even have health bars – they’re purely ability effects.
Charm system & Horadric Cube
If you’re a Diablo 3 veteran, you probably missed set items and more ways to modify gear in Diablo 4. That’s exactly what Lord of Hatred addresses with the Charm system and the Horadric Cube.
Charm system: The New Set System
The Charm system is a standard set system, similar to relics or runes in modern mobile games. It consists of a central Seal and up to six Charms. The Seal provides minor bonuses, but its main job is to unlock Charm slots – up to a maximum of six.
Charms work just like old-school set items. They typically grant powerful build-specific effects at 2 and 5 pieces. You can now farm various Charms and equip them for set bonuses. For example:
- The Horadric Chains set lets you summon all Soul Shard demons at once.
- Abaddon’s Flesh enhances your demon form.
- Shadow of Hatred provides crowd control and massive Abyss damage.
Later on, you can also find unique Charms with powerful single-piece bonuses. Expect even more Charm types to be added over time.
Horadric Cube: The Ultimate Gear Workstation
The familiar Horadric Cube is now a full-fledged item-processing machine. By consuming specific Horadric materials, you can perform a wide range of functions:
Add or reroll stats, Upgrade or convert items to Legendary or Unique rarity and so on.
Not all changes are 100% successful, but the system significantly reduces the grind for perfect endgame gear.

New Survival Mode & Integrated Reward System: Echoes of Hatred and War Plans
Additionally, Lord of Hatred introduces a survival challenge mode called Echoes of Hatred. You’ll need a special key – Trace of Echoes – to enter. This endless survival mode scales difficulty based on how many enemies you kill, gradually moving from your current world tier up to higher Torment levels. The longer you survive, the better the rewards (multiple Legendaries minimum). Currently, this is the most rewarding endgame activity, even surpassing dungeons.
To encourage players to try Echoes of Hatred and other content, the expansion also adds War Plans. This system acts as an extra reward layer that integrates all core activities:
- Tree of Whispers
- Nightmare Dungeons
- Kurast Undercity
- And more
You can now select a path in War Plans, complete a series of challenges, and earn bonus rewards. Complete enough, and you’ll unlock activity-specific skill points that add extra effects to those modes – such as letting a boss drop loot twice or spawning an extra chest. This not only incentivizes playing different activities but also adds meaningful variety to existing endgame loops.
Conclusion
Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, launching April 28, 2026, brings the new Warlock class with four distinct Soul Shard playstyles, plus the Charm system, Horadric Cube, Echoes of Hatred mode, and War Plans endgame. These new mechanics refresh combat, loot, and progression, making the expansion a major update that reshapes Diablo 4’s endgame and meta.
