Roblox has quietly rolled out an internal build hinting at a name change from “Friends” to “Connections,” leaving the community puzzled regarding the reasons for this name change. While it’s still under development and hasn’t been officially announced by Roblox, this renaming could change how players interact with this game focused on sharing experiences with others.
Ever since its release in 2006, Roblox has allowed users to create their own experiences and share them with others. As a gaming hub, Roblox lets players add “Friends” to jump into experiences together, chat, and build memories either with real-life friends or players they meet online. The game has a massive player base, with more Roblox users than the entire world population, as the platform counts over 8 billion accounts in total. With so many users, having an easy and accessible way to add contacts and meet friends is key to a smooth social experience, and recent findings might hint at a change to the friends system in Roblox.
Roblox seems to be testing a rename of its “Friends” feature, rebranding this feature as “Connections.” Though still hidden behind the scenes, this change could shift how players discover and team up to play their favorite Roblox games, giving the feature a fresh coat of paint without altering its core function. This change could leave some of the younger players confused, as “Connections” doesn’t carry the same obvious meaning as the previous name of this feature.
Roblox Changing "Friends" to "Connections"
Roblox players have already taken to social media to share their doubts about this “Friends” rebranding. Many poked fun at the idea of sending a “connection” invite instead of a friend request, while others questioned whether this tweak was necessary at all. Several players joked about how Roblox is seemingly becoming the new LinkedIn, where connections are more important than making friends, in a game mainly played by children. Others were more worried about the game’s priorities, as this change doesn’t seem to impact either the overall gameplay experience nor provide better safety measures for younger players on Roblox.
Most users stated that they would rather see improvements to safety tools in Roblox than a semantic change. Parents continue to ask for clearer moderation and tougher content filters, despite Roblox’s recent rollout of stricter child protections and parental toggles. CEO Dave Baszucki told parents to keep their children off Roblox if they fear for their safety, even though the platform implemented various changes to keep it as safe as possible.
